Start with an inspiration board/book.
Bringing ideas to paper is a great way to visualize you project and get focused.
Tip: My house is a work in progress so I created an inspiration book.
This books holds measurements, doodles, lists etc...
I started mine when I first bought my house in 2005 and take it with me whenever I go shopping or am researching material, finishes, furniture, decor etc.
If you have a smaller project an
inspiration board is the best start.

next step:
I start by looking at paint chips.Take your inspiration board/book
with you to the paint store. Choose paint chips that are
close to the color tones you created on your board.

Back at home arrange and tag them to the wall.
Leave them up for a few days and see if you like them.
The great thing about this is that you see the colors in all the
different shades of light through out the day,
which can really help with the color choice.
